@realDonaldTrump tweeted last night. And the night before that he upstaged the first Republican presidential primary debate with an interview on Twitter’s video platform by former Fox host Tucker Carlson. All this begs the question: Is Trump back on Twitter?

The answer is unlikely a complete yes or no.

Trump is likely to tweet intermittently, now that Twitter is being rebranded X by Elon Musk, who terminated those responsible for suspending Trump’s account. But Trump’s goals, one assumes, are to broaden his exposure coming into the election and spur adoption of his competing platform Truth Social.

Carlson’s interview perhaps reminded Trump that Twitter’s reach far exceeds Truth Social’s. At the time of publication, for instance, @realDonaldTrump had 6.39 million followers on Truth Social and his number of Twitter followers was 86.9 million.

Trump’s participation on Twitter is likely without significant downside for him or Truth Social. But how will the Twitter base respond to @realDonaldTrump’s return? Some will be pleased, some will be disgusted. Will more folks leave because of it than sign up or return? Only time will tell.
